5.3 million people were in receipt of an out-of-work benefit in February 2009. Of these, 2.7 million (50%) were sick or disabled, 1.4 million (14%) were unemployed and 0.7 million (14%) were lone parent.
What should be done about the above statistics? I have heard politicians talking about cutting disability benefits, or helping the disabled back into work. Okay, I see the idea behind this, yes, the sick and disabled do need help and encouragement to return to work. They need jobs that fit their skills and abilities. That is the big dilemna. It is all very well helping them in this area, but if there are no jobs for them to go to, all this talk from our politicians is just rhetoric.
I believe that they are attacking this problem from the wrong position, first of all, jobs need to be found for them to fill. Since the above figures were published, the amount of unemployed has risen sharply, so therefore it is much worse now.
The UK is allowing immigrants into this country at an unprecedented rate. It has an estimated 1,000,000 illegal immigrants, which are costing this country millions of pounds per year, and to help fund this our governments are threatening to cut benefits for the the sick and disabled? It is going to make life even harder for them?
There are a few and I believe fairer and better ways to ease these problems.
1. Remove all illegal immigrants ASAP
2. Make citizenship of the UK a cherished thing; break the law and you lose your right to be British and then be subject to removal to your country of origin.
3. Stop immediately all immigration to the UK, unless, they have something (A Trade or skill) to bring with them so that they will not be a drain on the resources of this country.
I am in no way prejudiced against people from a foreign land. If they have something good to bring to this country and to add to it, then fine let them come. But just to let people in to sponge off of our services and to bleed our NHS dry is just plain stupidity.
I have the belief that before we can help others, we must first take care of our own health. Unless our economy is healthy, how on earth can we be expected to help others. this country must get its priorities right.
David Cole.
